Well baby visits
Newborns are generally seen within 2-3 days of discharge from hospital.
After the first visit, some babies may return several times in the first few weeks for weight, feeding, and jaundice assessments.
If you are with a midwife, the baby is generally followed by the midwife for the first until 6. Your baby’s first appointment with the pediatrician is at 2 months. If your midwife has any concerns, we are happy to see the baby prior to 2 months of age.
After the newborn period, regular visits and immunizations (according to the Ontario Immunization Schedule) are scheduled as follows:
2 months: check-up with DTaP-IPV-Hib/Pneumococcal C-13/Rotavirus
4 months: check-up with DTaP-IPV-Hib/Pneumococcal C-13/Rotavirus
6 months: check-up with DTaP-IPV-Hib
9 months: check-up with no immunizations
12 months: check-up with MMR/Menjugate/ Pneumococcal C-13
15 months: check-up with Varicella (chicken pox)
18 months: check-up with DTaP-IPV-Hib
DTaP-IPV-Hib: Diptheria, Tetanus, acellular Pretussis (whooping cough), Inactivated Polio Vaccine, Haemophilus influenza type b Vaccine
MMR: Measles, Mumps, Rubella Vaccine
Influenza vaccine is also offered during flu season for all infants and children over the age of 6 months.
Please ask your doctor if you would like more information about any of these visits or immunizations, or if you would like more information about additional vaccines not included in the Ontario vaccination schedule.
Annual Health Examinations
Starting at 2 years of age, children are seen every year for Annual Health Examinations.
Most of these visits do not have associated immunizations (according to the Ontario Immunization Schedule). Exceptions to this include:
4-6 years: DTaP-IPV/MMRV
14-years: Tdap
DTaP-IPV: Diptheria, Tetanus, acellular Pretussis (whooping cough), Inactivated Polio Vaccine
MMRV: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella Vaccine
Tdap: Tetanus, diphtheria, acellular Pertussis Vaccine
There are also immunizations given at school to all children in grade 7 (Hepatitis B and Meningococcal ACYW Vaccines) and all girls in grade 8 (Human Papilloma Virus Vaccine).
Influenza vaccine is also offered during flu season for all children.
Please ask your doctor if you would like more information about any of these visits or immunizations, or if you would like more information about additional vaccines not included in the Ontario vaccination schedule.
